ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The international travel website www.JustShortOfCrazy.com has named the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail as one of the top seven in the United States, ranked Number 2 according to a release on the site.

The Orange Beach Trail, which traverses much of Alabama’s Gulf State Park, checked in on the top trails list right behind the world-famous 2,500 mile Pacific Crest Trail.

Among others on the list are the Waihee Ridge Trail on Maui and the trail system of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee, which includes a 72 mile stretch of the famed Appalachian Trail’s total length of nearly 2,200 miles.

From the Website: “You don’t have to leave the country to find great places to hike. In fact, some of the most stunning trails in the world can be found under a flag of red, white and blue! Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just an eager beginner, here are seven places to work up a good sweat.”

Of the Branyon trail, the site posted:

#2. Orange Beach

Orange Beach is home to the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, and like the name suggests, there’s a lot of backcountry to be explored. You’ll see everything from alligators to bobcats in the Alabama wild, and if you listen very closely, you might even hear the call of the yellow-headed blackbird.
