Running Scared 5k Run/Walk and Wicked Woods Festival Offer Fun for All Ages

Post-run party features Wagyu Beef hamburgers complements of RE/Max Paradise and The Hangout, Haunted Hayrides, Spooky Forest and Ghost Stories!

Running Scared is back and promises to be a fun treat for people of all ages. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail Foundation will host the revival of locals-favorite Running Scared 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run on Oct. 25, 2014. The run will take place inside the Backcountry Trail just before dusk to provide a spooky yet family-friendly after-party atmosphere. Runners are encouraged to wear costumes and be entered into the costume contest to win prizes, such as a free weekend at a Gulf State Park cabin.

The 5K run will take place on the Gulf Oak Ridge paved trail and approximately 1 mile of off-road trails in the Gulf State Park. It will end at the Sportsplex parking lot, where an after-party with food, beverages, runners’ awards, costume contest prizes, and music will be held. The 1 Mile Fun Run will also start and end at the Sportsplex and will include the Twin Bridges paved trail and three wooden bridges.

5K Run fees are $20 for early bird registration, $25 for regular registration and $30 for on-site registration. The 1 Mile Fun Run fee is $10 for early bird registration, $12 for regular registration and $15 for on-site registration.  Please visit Running Scared 5k Run/Walk to register online. #RunningScared5k

Following the runs, the Gulf State Park’s Wicked Woods Festival includes a “Haunted Hayride” that will take runners, non-runners, families and kids of all ages trick-or-treating along a decorated trail. The Wicked Woods festivities include:

•  Haunted Hayride for all ages from the Sportsplex to the Backcountry Trail Pavilion and Butterfly Garden – ends at 9:00 pm
•  “Trail of Horrors” spooky forest section for those 12 and up
•  Halloween festival at the Pavilion with bounce house, games, music and more
•  Costume contests for runners, families, and kids
•  “Best Scene” winner for Hayride spooky spots participants
•  Ghost stories • Fire pits and marshmallow-roasting
•  Music
•  Much more!

Area businesses, families or organizations are encourage to sponsor and to take part in the festival by setting up a scary scene or dressing up at a spot on the hayride to promote your business or cause.

Proceeds from the 5K Run and the 1K Fun Run will benefit the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail. Established in 2003, the Trail has become a valuable asset to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach community. Winding through six distinct ecosystems along seven paved trails, the Backcountry Trail has proven to be a treasure for locals and visitors alike. Walking, running, biking, bird and animal watching, exploring, geo-caching, relaxing and enjoying nature are just a few of the many ways an estimated 200,000 locals and visitors use the trail each year.

The Wicked Woods Halloween Festival is being hosted by the Gulf State Park. A portion of their event, the “Trail of Horrors” spooky forest, is sponsored by Jensen’s Heart of Gold Foundation. Jensen’s Heart of Gold provides support for families of children who have been diagnosed with cancer. Their tireless efforts help these courageous families in their greatest time of need. Other proceeds from the Hayride will benefit the Backcountry Trail Foundation.

The Haunted Hayride cost is $2 per person and ends at 9:00 pm. Admission into the Trail of Horrors for those 12 and up is also $2 per person.  Sponsorships are available, and event planners are also inviting local businesses, organizations or individuals to sign up to host their own spooky scene on the hayride for free.

There are many ways to help support the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail and The Gulf State Park’s Event:

1. Register to run in the 5k race. Even if you are a walker, a 5k can be walked in an hour at a brisk pace.
2. Register to participate in the 1 Mile Fun Walk. Dress up as a family and be eligible to win the family costume prize.
3. Attend the Halloween Festival and donate to the Hugh S. Brayon Backcountry Trail and the Jensen’s Heart of Gold Spooky Forest by riding the Hayride or visiting the Trail of Horrors.
4. Be a “Runner in Spirit” or donate in honor of a loved one, a cause or just because you care.
