Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge

Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge

The Bon Secour NWR contains 7,000 acres of wildlife habitat for migratory birds, nesting sea turtles and the endangered Alabama beach mouse. The refuge was established by Congress in 1980 to preserve the coastal dune ecosystem, to protect threatened and endangered species, to provide compatible recreational opportunities, and to serve as a living laboratory for students and scientists.

Fort Morgan is a Third System Coastal Defense Fort. It, like all the forts of the Third System, was built after the War of 1812 when Congress realized the need for stronger fortifications along the eastern and southern coastlines. The fort’s goal was to prevent any enemy forces from entering Mobile Bay.

Gulf State Park & Pier

Consisting of 6,150 acres with two miles of sugar white sand beaches, Gulf State Park has modern camping, cottages, trails and fishing. There is also tennis, group pavilions, 18-hole golf course, 900 acre lake for fishing, swimming, and water skiing, nature programs and picnic areas. Gulf State Park’s Pier opened July 23, 2009 and is the largest pier on the Gulf of Mexico at 1540ft. The new pier has 2448 feet of fishing space available along with wheelchair accessible.

The building that houses the Indian & Sea Museum was originally built in 1910 as a schoolhouse. It has served as a museum since 1995 and was moved to its present location in 1999.
