ABOUT HUGH S. BRANYON

About Hugh S. Branyon

Hugh S. Branyon dedicated his life to Alabama State Parks, serving with distinction for 47 years until his retirement on January 1, 2010. As a Park Superintendent, Branyon was known for his professionalism, dedication, and caring nature, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable accomplishments. His intentional and decisive leadership, paired with years of amazing Gulf State Park stories, endeared him to many.

Branyon's career with the parks began in the 1960s. After assignments across the state park system, he returned to Gulf State Park as the superintendent in 1976. His tenure was marked by significant contributions, including the development of a backcountry park trail, the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, ultimately named in his honor.

Established in 2003, this popular and unique trail system now spans 29 miles of paved and unpaved paths and boardwalks, providing access to several distinct ecosystems and outdoor recreational opportunities. Just as Hugh was a connector of communities and people, the trail serves to connect Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Gulf State Park for generations to come.

The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail has received national recognition, being named the top recreational trail in the country for two consecutive years in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards (2023 and 2024). This prestigious honor reflects not only the vision of Hugh S. Branyon but the collaborative efforts of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, along with partners in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores. Access to unique habitats and recreational opportunities continues along Alabama’s Gulf Coast as a result of this vision and the Alabama State Parks mission.

Branyon passed away on March 6, 2016, three days shy of his 77th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of kind stewardship and impactful leadership. His positive attitude and fairness made him a beloved leader and friend to many. His dedication and vision were admired and continue to provide a legacy of growth in the Alabama State Parks system. He is remembered not only for the trail that bears his name but also for his exceptional leadership and the countless lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.
